Mom passed away at her home at Shuswap Lodge in Salmon Arm. Born in Hamilton, Adrienne married Gerald Holmes and had three children, Stephen (Michelle), Stuart, and Elizabeth. She was a caring mother and a successful real estate agent. Mom had a beautiful singing voice and enjoyed acting in amateur theatre productions. She became a grandmother to Brittany and Zachary by her daughter, Elizabeth, and recently a great-grandmother to Lily Belle.
For the past twenty-eight years Adrienne lived in Salmon Arm near her sons. During that time, Nana enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren, Shayna, Isaac and Jacob Holmes. In 2015 Mom suffered a stroke which greatly curtailed her active social life and limited her speech.
Her family is so grateful to the care aides and staff of Shuswap Lodge for their loving support over the years, especially over this last challenging month. We also thank Dr. Heunis for his attentiveness, the Community Care nurses and care aides who saw her through her last days, Lakeside Medical, and Rev. David Ryttersgaard.
She wants people who knew and loved her to rejoice that she is now free of her earthly limitations and is home with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Her funeral service will be held at Crossroads Free Methodist Church on Saturday, March 11th at 11:00 a.m. Contributions to her memory may be made to the ALS Society.

A service will be held Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 1:00 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 2385 Golf Course Drive, Blind Bay, BC.
David Harold Nichols passed away peacefully with his loving wife at his side on March 1st, 2023. He was born on June 4th,1946 in Lucky Lake, SK and was the oldest of two children. Dave graduated from Moose Jaw Technical School with a diploma in Civil Technology and spent most of his career working with SaskTel in Regina. In 1970 he married Wilma Germaine and together they raised three children. They both retired in 2000 and in 2002 they left Regina and moved to Blind Bay, BC to get away from the wind and cold of Sask.
Dave had a few hobbies of which were curling (his favorite), golfing, hunting, fishing and boating. He especially loved his fall hunting trip to the cabin in Sask. and in summer he enjoyed taking friends and family out on his pontoon boat on the beautiful Shuswap Lake. He waterskied until he was 73 years young! Dave also enjoyed taking his family on road trips all over Canada and parts of the USA. He and Wilma took many vacations all over the world and Mexico was also a great get away from the snow in winter. Dave was a member of the Knights of Columbus and an active member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. This church was very dear to him as he was very instrumental with the design and overseeing the construction of it.
Dave (Papa) is survived by his wife Wilma, children Jared (Jayne) Nichols, Janelle (John) Tottenham and James (Genny) Nichols. Grandchildren Hailey, Ethan, Derek Nichols, Nathanial and Abigail Tottenham and Emmet Nichols, sister Denise (George) Wilson. Dave was predeceased by his parents Arnold and Mavis Nichols.

at the age of 85 years:
It is with great sadness that we must announce the passing of Donald Fredrik Tarabas (aka Papa, Dad, Hubby, Kathleen’s ‘Babe’) age 85, who passed on Thursday the 23rd of February 2023. He went peacefully in his sleep in his own bed, surrounded by hymns and love. He was no doubt greeted by his Mum and Dad, brothers, sister and childhood dog, Panda.
From his birth on the 16th of August 1937 until his last days, he lived life to the fullest. He was predeceased by his mother (Mary) and father (Stefan) and his 3 brothers, Pete, Karl and Walter, and his sister Elsie. He leaves behind his wife Kathleen, daughter Colleen and son Dan. He leaves behind seven Grandchildren. Five on Colleen’s side: Andrew (Jessica), William (Christine), Catherine, Alex and Emma, and two on Dan’s side, Brennan (Jessica) and Arcassa (Joey). He also had three and a half Great-Grandchildren: Alistair, Cole, Evie and soon to be born, Lucas.
Don grew up in Sault Ste Marie and when he was 17 years old, he left ‘the Soo’ to join the Navy and served for 26 years, from 1954 – 1980. During his Navy days, his favourite posting was to Bermuda where he took up scuba diving. He loved to be in the water and continued to dive when posted to Masset on the west coast, until into his 40’s where he would don his tank, mask and fins to clean his swimming pool in Vernon BC.
He remained an eligible bachelor until he married Kathleen Ruth Griggs on the 30 June 1976. They met in Masset and Kathleen had two well-behaved, very intelligent children of her own. (this is on the internet, so it must be true). Don took up the challenge of raising a 9-year old boy and 6-year old girl and he did a great job as a father and a husband. Whether taking the family camping or fishing in Masset or picking blueberries in the fields of the Northwest Territories while posted to Inuvik, he always found ways to expose the kids to new experiences.
He had an easy smile, and always made those around him feel comfortable. While stationed at CFS Inuvik as the Station Warrant Officer, he would invite retiring sailors over for a special dinner and thank them for their service. He loved to cook with his lovely wife and together they put on many kitchen parties. They always invited a few friends for dinner which was usually followed by a game of cards, some of which got pretty rowdy. The children were usually in bed by that time but from their bedroom upstairs, they could hear the sound of laughing and rough housing/scrambling around the kitchen or even the living room during a game of spoons. These dinners often had themes, where they would choose various cuisines such as Chinese, Hawaiian, Mexican, Italian or Ukrainian. His Perogies and Borscht were especially delicious and all meals were made with love, the special ingredient that everyone appreciated.
After his retirement from the Navy, he worked for a few more years with Intercraft, putting on many miles driving around the lower mainland of BC until he fully retired in the late 80’s. Upon retirement, he and Kathy spent a lot of time on the road with their RV Trailer, heading down to California or Mexico for the winters and spending many sunny days on the golf course. On the road, they met many new people who would become lifelong friends. He had no problem making friends, and Don was known to be trustworthy and loyal. He would not hesitate to lend a hand where needed. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in Abbotsford for many years, whether contributing with his outstanding carpentry skills, or supporting fundraising efforts by selling raffle tickets in the mall.
He would give you the shirt off his back and showed his love of his friends and families not through his words, but through his works. He spent innumerable hours helping family members improve or repair their homes. His skills included carpentry, installing Gyproc and crack-filling, plumbing or electrical work to name a few. His helping hands were always welcomed by whoever needed them.
Later in life, he became very interested in woodcarving and he learned a lot from his friends with the same interest. His work even made the local newspaper on more than one occasion.
He dabbled in real estate as an investment and he did pretty well. Over the years he rented out single homes, a duplex and even a 10-unit apartment building. With regards to investing, his advice was “Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see”, or “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is”.
Don loved the outdoors and being in nature, and this love was passed onto his kids. Like many Ukrainians, he enjoyed his libations and when good friends or family came over, he could often be heard making the toast “na zdorovya”, (to health, or to your health). He never forgot his roots, and although his father rarely spoke of his time in the Canadian Internment Camps during and after WWI, Don embraced his Ukrainian roots and when cooking Ukrainian food, the English or Ukrainian word for any dish was often used interchangeably.
Don was cremated and his Granddaughter Arcassa (a ceramicist/potter), will be making an urn for his ashes, and he will be buried with his wife Kathleen when the time comes. He was loved, and he will be missed.

It comes with deep sorrow and broken hearts for the family of William Michael Vike, usually known as Bill(y), to announce his untimely passing on February 23, 2023 in Vancouver, BC. Bill was born January 10, 1968 in Salmon Arm, BC. After graduating from Salmon Arm Sr. Sec., Bill ventured out and tried his hand at a variety of jobs and truly became a jack-of-all trades. His love of fishing landed him work, commercial fishing for a total of 26 seasons. He also learned carpentry and other construction skills, specializing in metal cladding for 35 years. Bill was also an extremely experienced mechanic and there were very few jobs he wouldn’t tackle. In addition, he had the imagination to see beauty and value in what most people would call junk but often profited from these investments. Bill was a talented artist and created beautiful art with his hands, but his preferred art form was performing music. One of his favorite locations was at the main wharf in Salmon Arm. There he would entertain tourists and locals alike bringing a happy, carefree vibe. Often, they’d stop to listen and many would break into spontaneous dancing. Bill had some severe physical issues but despite this he had a strong sense of humour and work ethic. Billy possessed a generous, compassionate, and understanding spirit. He knew what it was like to struggle which even made him more sensitive to those who had similar challenges. Bill would frequently provide food, clothing, shelter and kind words of encouragement to others, especially in the homeless community. He also had a deep faith in Jesus Christ and our comfort is the assurance that he is now dancing on those streets paved with gold in the presence of God! Bill is survived by his loving mother (Doris) Irene Vike, siblings David, Norene(Paul), Doris, Mark(Paulette), Dan(Marilyn), Jim, Norm, Julie(Jeff), Paul(Rhonda), Pauline(Randy), 30 nieces, nephews and their spouses, 43 great nieces and nephews and numerous friends. He was predeceased by his father Norman, brother-in-law Ken, nephew Josh and niece Danielle Marie. Bill’s life truly impacted so many. Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life, 12:30pm on Saturday, March 11, 2023, held at the Shuswap Community Church, 3151 6th Ave NE, Salmon Arm, B.C. Reception and open mic to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bill Vike’s name to Union Gospel Mission, 601 East Hastings St., Vancouver, BC. V6A 1J7.
Billy, you will be forever and unconditionally loved!

In Loving Memory
With profound grief and sadness, we announce the passing of Morgan Paige Hill (Paige), a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Predeceased by his parents Edgar and Jean Hill, Paige leaves behind his loving wife Diane, daughters Kristie (Brian) and Shannon (Mark), stepsons Craig (Christine) and Jeffrey, brother Lance (Elmira), sister Jill, grandchildren Sebastian, Jillian, Jaida, Levi, Brock, Madison, Haille and Vaughan, niece Amy (Jordan), nephew Tory and great niece Holly as well as aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Paige was born on October 14, 1956 in Belleville, Ontario. He attended school in Madoc and secondary school in Ignace. As the eldest he grew up quickly as his mother spent much time in the hospital. Paige received his electrical apprenticeship January 1, 1976 and became an interprovincial journeyman electrician while working at Mattabi Mines. He also became Captain of the Mine Search and Rescue team. His electrical career took him across Canada from Ignace, Ontario to Havelock, Ontario, Lanigan, Saskatchewan, White River, Ontario, Mackenzie, BC, New Westminster, BC, Port Alberni, BC, and Nanaimo, BC working in the mining, wood products and pulp and paper industries. He achieved his Bachelor of General Studies Degree through Simon Fraser University in 2001 and hung out his own electrical shingle in 2006 in Port Alberni, BC before joining BC Safety Authority of Nanaimo, BC in 2010. He retired from his position as Regional Business Leader over Vancouver Island in 2020.
Sadly, Paige left us on January 19, 2023 after a defiant battle with cancer. He fought valiantly with all he had, for all he loved. His strength and mental fortitude inspired friends and loved ones who will forever cherish his memories.
The legacy of Paige will be one of love, generosity, teaching, mentoring and coaching. He was a consummate host, loved entertaining, sharing his music, playing drums for friends and family. He loved to cook, design and build, travel, SCUBA dive, boat and read. His quest for knowledge was limitless and throughout his life he practiced a combination of the Good Samaritan Act, the Mariners Act and the Golden Rule. He was also a student of the Masonic Lodges of Mackenzie, BC And Port Alberni, BC and really enjoyed the teachings and fellowships.
We would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to Dr. Cody Thomson, Dr. Warren Bell and the Palliative Care Staff and Team of Shuswap Lake General Hospital for the care and compassion they showed Paige during his illness. A big thank you to the management and staff of Fischer’s Funeral Home and our family and friends for their love, support and care.

at the age of 88 years:
Mary Helen Cooper, a mother of 4 daughters, 4 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren passed away Jan 16, 2023 at age 88.
Family was most important to Mary, and she dedicated her time and energy unselfishly to providing a loving home with her husband Orville Leonard Cooper, whom she was married to for 63 years, until his passing on February 3, 2020 at age 87.
The home was filled with the best homemade meals and baking. She spent endless hours in her garden and sewing matching clothes for her 4 girls.
In her later years, she was stricken with Parkinson’s and Lewy Body Dementia, but we could all see her glimpses of joy when she was visited by family, particularly the little great grandchildren whom she loved to watch play.
She is greatly missed, as not only was she a beautiful caring mother, grandmother and great grandmother, but a wonderful woman. To know her was to love her! We hope you’re “Dancing in the Sky.”

Please join us for an Acadian lunch to celebrate the life of Bernie on Saturday, May 27, 2023, 12pm, Notch Hill Hall, 1639 Notch Hill Road, Sorrento, BC
Bernie passed quietly at Bastion Place after a brief illness, on January 13 at age 96.
He was born in Moncton, New Brunswick on July 3, 1926. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Beryl (1998); his parents, Lévi and Loretta; his brothers Rudy (Flora), Eric (Annie) and Pierre (Honorine) and sister Stella (Henri). Left to remember him fondly are sister-in-law Annie; brother-in-law Henri; his large extended family and many longtime friends.
Bernie joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1944 at the age of 18. He worked as a surveyor with the Mapping and Charting Department of the Royal Canadian Engineers and rose to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer.
He travelled throughout the northern wilderness by dogsled and packhorse train during the postwar years when the defense of the North was a priority for the Canadian Military. He surveyed and mapped areas of the country that had not been precisely charted until then. He was awarded a Centennial Medal in 1967 for his contributions.
He and Beryl moved from Ottawa to BC in 1973. It didn’t take long for Bernie to become actively involved in the Sorrento community. He worked as a contractor building houses, he participated on the Sorrento Water Board and was a member of the Shuswap Volunteer Fire Department. He was honoured as Citizen of the Year in 1989.
Bernie was never idle and he truly enjoyed being around people. He loved spending time at Romyn’s farm in Notch Hill; hosting parties and preparing delicious food for his friends and neighbours. In his retirement he learned to ride a motorcycle, fly an ultralight and he travelled across Canada in a converted school bus with his restored 1928 Ford Model A in the back.
Even after suffering a stroke, he never lost his zest for life. From the comfort and confines of his recliner, he still managed to give good advice, get his neighbours to attend to his needs like a well-disciplined military unit, enjoy a glass of rum with his friends on Friday nights and hand out jars of New Brunswick lobster to anyone who dropped by. He still loved good food and had a twinkle in his eye until the end.
Sincere gratitude to all the Community Care Aides and neighbours who took such good care of Bernie for many years; allowing him to live in his home for as long as possible; to the staff at Bastion who gave him loving care and comfort in his last year and to Dr. Osmond for her genuine compassion.
Bernie was a proud Acadian, which showed in his joie de vivre, good times shared with friends and his deep connection with his family’s history.
À la prochaine, mon ami.
A celebration of Bernie’s life will take place at the Notch Hill Hall, 1639 Notch Hill Rd, Sorrento, at 11:00 a.m. on May 27, 2023. Everyone is welcome. If you would like to honour Bernie’s memory, donations may be made to the Shuswap Branch of the BCSPCA. Many an orphaned cat found love, comfort and safety in Bernie’s home.

Retiring to Sicamous in 1994, Joan and Bob enjoyed spending time on their boat the U ‘n Me. Joan continued to teach swimming and Aquafit classes at the pool in Salmon Arm.

Karl was born the 3rd child of Emma and Karl Soellig September 19, 1939, in Halberstadt, Germany.
He completed his schooling and apprenticeship as a Machinist in East Germany and then was allowed to join his parents and younger brother Wolfgang in Idar-Oberstein in West Germany. In 1961 he relocated to Stuttgart where he met his sweetheart Rosemarie, and they married in 1962. Their son Joerg was born in 1963 and Frank followed in 1965.
In 1975 he made a big life change when he decided instead of moving to Frankfurt he would relocate his family to Canada. An idea he had already considered before marriage. They arrived on October 20, 1975 in Grande Prairie, Alberta where Karl had secured work at Steel Industries.
They were welcomed by the Grande Prairie Society of German Canadians and had many good friends and years of activities. He started his own machine shop and was well known for solving problems and fixing anything that was brought to him. His motto was “if you can dream it I can fix it”.
His love of skiing got him involved in Ski Patrol. He also got into soaring and bought his own glider and spent many summers at a gliding camp in Cowley, AB.
After retirement Karl and Rosemarie moved to Blind Bay in 2001 and enjoyed living in “paradise”
Karl was predeceased by his parents and sisters Gerda 1977, Hanna 2021 and Wolfgang 2022. Karl will be missed by his wife of 60 years and his 2 sons and their families.
We would like to thank Dr. Thomson and the staff at Piccadilly Care Centre for their love and support.

We packed up the kids and moved to BC in 2014 to enjoy slightly warmer temperatures. When Covid hit he had to change his course of path and drove truck in the states, the latest company being Reimer Bros Trucking. He enjoyed his many destinations south of the border and would often let us know it’s warmer down there. He loved camping with his family, taking the kids fishing, and always baking cookies in the camper at night (the kids loved it). He would crank old time music & the kids loved it dancing around. He loved campfires & wiener roasts in our backyard. He loved watching new movies with the kids, especially the action ones. Dan was a family man, enjoyed quiet evenings with his wife, Lego building with his kids, loved to cook & bake (leaving the cleaning up to Shelley). He was an avid guitarist in his youth, passing that onto his first-born daughter Jenny. He spoiled his dogs rotten, treating them just as another kid. Gardening was a passion of his, always keeping a well manicured yard. He loved hunting with his brother Jim in Northern Alberta & his siblings get togethers wherever they may have happened. He loved his poker games with whoever was willing to lose in hopes he would win. Dan had a heart of gold and will be greatly missed by everyone.
Thank you to Shuswap Lake Hospital, everyone that we encountered was amazing for the care they gave, Dr. Weiker thank you for all you have done, the calls to make sure we were ok. at the age of 71 years:
It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Dean (Hatrack) Burns who lost his battle with ALS within 4 months of his diagnosis. Dean passed with his loving wife Karen by his side at Salmon Arm, BC, where they resided.
Dean was a kind hearted giving soul, with a sense of humour that touched everyone who knew him. His brilliant mind always made stimulating conversation on any subject, no matter who he was with, and he had the amazing ability to keep everyone engaged and laughing. He was deeply loved and will be sadly missed.
Dean was a gifted Photo Journalist, working for the Calgary Herald in his early career. He covered the Calgary Stampede and skillfully captured the ‘Heart and Soul’ of the rodeo and its cowboys. Whatever his assignment was for the Herald, he did it with perfection. Dean continued his passion in Europe where he took time to capture photos and journal about the countries he visited. When he returned to Calgary he entered into a business partnership at the Avenida Photo Shop, sharing his passion by providing professional event, wedding, and family photos. When the time was right, Dean opened up his own photography business in Calgary, called Burns Photography. Eventually Dean moved on to start a new and exciting chapter in his life, where he opened his own campground just outside of Calgary, called Pine Creek RV Campground until he retired at the age of 55. Dean met Karen in 2005, and they were immediately and always inseparable. On February 13th, 2009 they were married in the Bahamas, and their souls were forever intwined, united in love. “Love you today, tomorrow, and forever” were Dean and Karen’s daily words to each other, and the memory of his love will be everlasting.
Dean’s other passion was his Harley and cruising the country side with his best friend Greg for as long as he was able to do so. He loved his music and was a master at music trivia. His favorite times were spent socializing with friends and watching all sports whether it be Nascar, horse racing, or team sports. Dean truly loved the Rodeo, and Dean (Hatrack) and Karen (Lil Missy) took in a lot of them through the years. He also loved to travel to beautiful places, horseback riding, boating, fishing, and his Budweiser. Dean was truly an honourable man and a joy to be with at anytime.
Dean was predeceased by his parents, James Francis Burns Sr. and Pearl Burns of Calgary Ab. He is survived by his loving wife Karen, his children Amy Burns, Cara (Jay) Nelson, Jason Burns, his stepchildren Ashley Deisman, Kyle (Kayley) Deisman, sister Bonnie Costello, brother Jim (Pat) Burns, grandchildren Oliver, Ashely, Fallon, Calon, Rosie and Elayna, mother in law Sophie, brothers in law Larry (Marilyn), Harvey, sister in law Linda (Dave), as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Also missing him will be Cutter, King of Twang, Holmer, Jackson, Lily, and Clover.
Special thank you to Nurse Laura and the palliative care nursing team; the Salmon Arm and Kelowna medical teams; Reverend Shirley for her blessings and prayers; to Dean’s brother-in-law Larry who was able to stay and lend his support in Dean’s final days; to Diane, Brian and Alana for their gifts of food and acts of kindness; and to all others who also helped make Dean’s battle easier.
At Dean’s request, a celebration of life will be held at a later date to be set in the Spring. Please visit Fishers Funeral Services website at www.fishersfuneralservices.com to share your memories, stories, and condolences.
