We are gathering for a Celebration of Life at the 1516 Pub, 7673 Okanagan Landing Rd, Vernon on September 30 from 1pm to 3pm, which was going to be Sylvia’s 90th birthday.
Sylvia passed away at 89. Born in Star City, Saskatchewan, passed away at Vernon Jubilee Hospital on August 24, 2024 after a fall on August 3rd.
Sylvia lost her husband Douglas Stewart on July 5, 2010 and her daughter Doris McCullough at 48 yrs old, on February 5, 2004 and recently lost her grandson Fraser Gerrard on December 13, 2023
She left behind her daughters Julie Gerrard, Sharon Hoeflich, and son Curtis Hoeflich as well as many wonderful friends, much loved cat Ebony and little pup Coco Nut. She is missed terribly as she was a very beautiful active independent woman who would walk her cat and dog around the neighborhood on a regular basis, loved to share a smile and stop for a chat. She loved to listen to music, dance, play cards, crib, garden, and watch the BlueJays and Curling in the winter. Sylvia spent many years in her early career raising 4 children as a hairstylist who owned and managed her own salon. After leaving Maple Ridge, she courageously changed careers to become a Care Aide in Calgary then moved to Salmon Arm to be closer to her grandchildren Tasha and Fraser Gerrard where she met her beloved, Doug Stewart. They enjoyed many years together traveling and had many adventures here in Vernon where they eventually lived.
When I’m Gone
When I come to the end of my journey
And I travel my last weary mile,
Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned
And remember only the smile.
Forget unkind words I have spoken;
Forget that I’ve stumbled and blundered
And sometimes fell by the way.
Remember I have fought some hard battles
And won,ere the close of the day.
Then forget to grieve for my going,
I would not have you sad for a day.
But in summer just gather some flowers
And remember the place where I lay
And come in the evening
when the sun paints the sky in the west,
Stand for a few moments beside me
And remember only my best.

A memorial service will be held on September 6, 2024 at 1:00 PM at St. John’s Anglican Church, Salmon Arm
On Friday August 23, 2024 Florence’s angels “Marlene, Lois and Leona” came to guide her home.
Florence was born to Fred & Jessie Munro on December 26, 1926 in Innisfail, Alberta. In 1932 the family moved to the homestead in the Goodwin area (Debolt) Alberta. She had 3 brothers (Keith, Willie and Tom) and sister Alice (all deceased).
In 1949 she married Hank Doerkson and they moved into Grande Prairie. They had 3 children (Lois, Glenda and Marlene). Florence worked various jobs in Grande Prairie including the plywood plant, fabric store, and health unit.
In 1965 the family moved to Canoe (Tippi Canoe Campground), then to Enderby but finally settling in Salmon Arm. Dad worked at Canoe Mill and Mom worked at raising us girls and part time at the fabric store. She was very involved in the Anglican Church also with the Anglican WA catering to events such as the Fish & Game Banquet, weddings, etc. They spent a lot of time traveling, camping, and traveling to Hawaii. Sadly, in September of 1982 Hank passed away.
Florence kept herself busy by working at the Church’s Thrift Store, tending to her flowers, traveling to Hawaii (by herself), but she was lonely. She met Charles Abney and they married in Hawaii in February 1984. Then they got the travel “bug” and they traveled to Hawaii every year, taking the camper van across Canada, going to Alaska, and numerous other destinations along the way, they were always on the go, while still maintaining her yard of beautiful flowers (thanks Marlene and Lois for watering)!
She was predeceased by her first husband Hank Doerkson (1982), second husband Charles Abney (2008), daughters Marlene Pyper (2022), Lois Schindel (2022), and stepdaughter Leona Johnson (2023).
She is survived by her daughter Glenda Jones, stepdaughter Judy Fothergill (Colin), son in laws Jack Johnson (Leona), Richard Annesley (Marlene), grandchildren Jason Schindel (Amanda), Lori Gervais (Bob Cassidy), Tonja Workman (Matt), great grandchildren Memphis, Makena, Madison, Morgan, Mackenzie, Sutton, Esme and Arden, step grandchildren Kevin (Trina) Johnson, Dana Johnson (Kelly Stinson), Robin Fothergill, Shannon Fothergill and 11 step great grandchildren.
We would like to give a special thank you for the exceptional care given by Parkview Place and all her friendly visits from people.
